The Origins of Voight
I was born in Flint, Michigan in 1987. As a child I was interested in music, and received my first electric guitar, a gift from my father, at the age of 12. As I taught myself to play, I grew interested in acoustic instruments,
eventually settling on the mandolin as my instrument of choice.
I received my first mandolin when I was 17, but the instruments poor quality and tone distracted me so much that I found it difficult to practice and play. I began researching mandolin construction at 18, thinking that with a mandolin kit and my artistic background I could create a good quality instrument. Skeptical about taking this step, though, I discussed it with local luthier Grady Jones. Grady told me that building from a kit was only slightly less complicated than building from scratch, and offered to walk me through the process of building my first instrument, even providing the necessary tools and materials to execute the construction.
Under Grady's tutelage I learned the fundamentals of luthiery and excellent craftsmanship. After completing my first mandolin, I proceeded to build more at my home in Davison, Michigan, where I continue to produce the beautiful instruments for which Voight is known.
